Alternative TV – (Red Ronnie’s Bazar) Nice Records – 1978

Graves Of Duluxe Green / Alternatives To Normal Eating Habits

Knights Of The Future (Fellow Sufferer)

Inspired by a comment by Nic recently about the rising cost of D.I.Y. records, here is one record of the genre which is as rare as Arsenal Football Club winning trophies in a season.

This record, which I hope will be worth a few bob when I eventually pass this fad stage (thirty years this fad has lasted) of collecting and listening to vinyl records, is from the Italian alternative magazine Red Ronnies Bazar, a magazine that covered many great bands and translated all interviews into English and Italian. Half a page to each language. I have the huge Throbbing Gristle magazine that came with TG ‘Mission Is Terminated’ LP on Nice Records. Alas I have not got the issue (number 4) that this record came with.

Stunning versions of ‘Alternatives’ and ‘Fellow Sufferer’ live somewhere, no doubt recorded in 1978 when the Alternative TV name was still active.

Let’s get this little bugger on Ebay…!

Martin C gave me a clue in the comments below about where this record was recorded – From the Overground Records website below.

Alternative TV : Live 1978 (Remastered) : Press Release

Recorded during the summer of ’78, this album captures Alternative TV when they were at the forefront of the post-punk English new wave. The band were formed by Mark Perry who was editor of punk’s first fanzine, the infamous Sniffin’ Glue (recently compiled into a book by Sanctuary). They quickly rose to become one of the most important punk/new wave bands in Britain during 1977-79. This CD features the band at the height of their creative power and many of their most popular live numbers are included, such as ‘Love Lies Limp’ and ‘Viva La Rock ‘n’ Roll’.

A version of this CD was originally released in 1993 as a limited edition which quickly sold out. With the recent discovery of the original tapes by Italian journalist Red Ronnie, Overground and Mark Perry couldn’t resist the opportunity to re-master and re-package the CD, adding extra tracks, re-design the artwork and expand the sleeve notes.

It was Ronnie who recorded Alternative TV at the Meanwhile Gardens Free Festival in August 1978. 3 of the tracks – ‘Alternatives’, ‘Fellow Sufferer’ and ‘Graves Of Deluxe Green’ – were released by Ronnie on a 7″ EP on the Nice label, given away free with Red Ronnie’s fanzine, Bazar, in 1980. Alternative TV’s performance at Meanwhile Gardens captures the band during the period of transition between ‘The Image Has Cracked’ and ‘Vibing Up The Senile Man’. Drummer, Chris Bennett had been sacked a month before the gig and it was the first time the ‘Vibing’ material was played live, although ‘Release The Natives’ and ‘The Good Missionary’ were premiered the previous month on the John Peel show. Here & Now guitarist, Steffie Sharpstrings, helps out on drums for a couple of the songs.

Believe these were recorded in Meanwhile Gardens, and are the same versions that cropped up on the ‘Live ’78’ CD on Overground Records

Oh, glad that’s sorted then. Any chance of an upload of “Live at Rat Club ’77”, with the full ‘Alternatives to Nato’ anarchist mag article being read out?

I have the original vinyl here, but I think Overground released this on CD so a little worried about putting it up here for free when it is still available.

Actually it wasn’t Overground that released it on CD – I think it was Obsession so it’s probably long gone!

But to complicate matters, there *was* a track from that show on The Industrial Sessions (released by Overground) which wasn’t included on the original LP/CD.

That’s one of my favourite records, especially with Sandy Robertson’s/GPO’s running commentary… If only there was more live tapes of Alex Ferguson-era ATV floating around…
