Where exactly was the Wood Green arts centre squat? I’ve spotted a few references to Wood Green on this site and as I’ve come to know that area reasonably well I find it bizarre to think it was ever a hotbed for *any* sort of subcultural activity…
February 18th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Following on from the last post, I remember going down to some big place in Wood Green a few times in 1986 and seeing concerts (with people like Blower playing): would that have been the arts centre?
(My memory is VERY hazy…)
February 18th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Most likely. Got a few pics of eat shit playing there late 85…

and a couple more on myspace.
Mick Bladder would be the boy with the photies, but I cant contact him, Herr Will de Beest may be able to. Mick would have lots, prob exterior too.
As to where, memory fails me, havent lived in london since 88, sorry!
February 18th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Alan…”radgepunk” on myspace was one of the squatters,so he’d know .
Also Ginny and the fella whose name eludes who were state hate, the band and pa system.I learned a valuble lesson from them for later use in another life,as a DJ I was assured of getting a play at a time to suit me ….cos I owned the sound system!

I remember the first time I went to the Wood Green Arts Centre very well. I had just squatted a council house in Albion Drive around the corner from Brougham Road. The previous tenant was pretty ill and had moved up the street to her sisters. She was fine with us moving in as she thought she might get rehoused or the house might get repaired. One Sat myself and housemates went off to a CND rally where amongst other things we entertained ourselves by letting off screamer rockets (8 for a quid – hand launchable, make a loud screaming noise but fairly harmless) at various Labour Party dignitaries. On returning to our street we came across some workmen outside our house and asked them what they were doing.
“Turning off the electricity as a fire had gutted the inside.” Karmic backlash for our rocketry antics or just aged leaky gas pipes? Who knows. What to do? There was a gig on in Wood Green that night. Some band called God Told Me To Do It. Lets go. Getting up to the squatted arts centre, we paid our moneys and came into a large hall where I was greeted by a wondrous sight – the band / audience trying to break down the band / audience divide by having a fight with each other, the conflict interspersed by strange chants (Was ‘Libya, Libya, hard as fuck’ operational then?). There was only one thing I could do in the situation – let off the remaining screamers to add a bit of extra pizazz to the atmosphere. The perfect antidote to a house burning down situation.
When the fire case came to court a few months later, the Daily Mail got hold of it and we got the front page headline – ‘Squatters Burn Down Cancer Victims Home’. Nice.
February 18th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
always thought ginny looked splendid in her tutu whilst playing the bass.very nice people.
they put me and monty up one night after a gig at woolwich poly(?) think it was admit your shit maybe conflict played as well.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
excellent choice in seventies wood effect stack heels too (down boy!)

The longest GTMTDI managed to “play” before fighting stopped the show was 7 and a half minutes. The downstairs of the hammersmith clarendon was closed down due to the damage caused by rioting at their gig there.
And lets not forget the Blue House where willdebeest made all suspected journos fill out an application for the libyan army to be let in.The flyers had advertised “live sex”,there was a banner across the backwall of the stage reading “live sex”.At a certain point I climbed a step ladder, stapled up a letter “C” at the start of the banner and explained to the audience that there had been a printers error,in fact “CLIVE sex” would be performing,he being an erotic poet from birmingham. The largely femenist separatist audience were then treated to willdebeest dressed as noel coward reciting the most awful filth that I could write. He was instantly felled in a vicious attack. Then GTMTDI tried to take the stage.Unfortunately Bill(RIP) had lubricated himself with a whole bottle of vodka and fell through the glass panelling stageside, cut his wrists open and turned to spray the audience with jets of blood. And this at the height of the goverments aids tombstone campaign.Bill was rushed to hospital.Take two, with a borrowed bassist GTMTDI take the stage with a very ropy soho stripper doing her act amongst them.Surprisingly the rioting didnt get too out of control for nearly 4 minutes by which time the band were fighting for their lives to such an extent that playing on became unviable.Quite a success all round.the funniest bit was yet to come…..Bill came round in hospital with the king of hangovers and they couldnt give him a transfusion for fear of sending him into deadly shock as he had more alchohol in his veins than blood.
February 18th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Albion Drive/ Albion Square E8… Danmac above ..sure I remember reading in Hackney Gazette when Eastenders was launched that ‘Albert Square’ was based on Albion Square next to Albion Drive near to Brougham Road. And the market in Eastenders was meant to be Ridley Road market.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
This all sounds very familiar…
I seem to remember a lot of mayhem and fighting – magic!
However, for the life of me, I can’t remember anything else about getting there or why I was evn there at all…
I was living with members of the band Doom at the time, and a bunch of other people from bands like Deviated Instinct and Filthkick all lived in surrounding streets, so I imagine I had travelled down with them…
February 18th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Got your squares wrong, Al.
It’s based on Fassett Square, just off the Dalston end of Graham Rd, at the rear of the old German hospital.
February 18th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Curses, drat etc… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Square agrees it was Fassett Square
Well at least I had the right London Borough!
February 18th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Re: Steve comment, Wood Green also had Southern Studios which of course always had a string of strange individuals visiting, Arts Centre in Redvers Road near the station, the Kardboard Box venue, early Club Dog nights were held in Wood Green before moving to the Robey in Finsbury Park, a few decent squats in Ewart and Pellat Grove, The Nelson pub where a lot of punkers were served drinks for a while. Tania’s squat down Lordship Lane. Very different nowadays but for a time in the mid to late 80’s it was vibrant enough…in the summer a lot of the punks (named Crusties by this time) met up in the park next to Turnpike Lane tube. This meeting place is now a basketball court!
February 18th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
The ‘Kardboard Box’ rings a bell…
Was Tania a Scottish girl with heavily spiked green/orange hair?
February 18th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Yeah, big hair, she went onto wearing it down cos her dole was cut off, and she went to work for the job centre of all places!!! She then spiked it up when she came out to gigs…this flat hair Tania was a bit later on 1988 or so I think…but amusing never the less!
February 18th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
At the Job Centre, eh? Blimey…
She stayed up here in Brum a few times – last time would have been about 1988 with a bunch of other stinky scum from the smoke…
February 18th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Yeah, everyone was a bit ripe in them days!
February 19th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Tanya, stevie, laura, the recently resurfaced alan, with help from animal, bladder and bill seemed to be prime movers in the early days.I went to put the leccy on,thanks to my tutelage by the luggster

‘God Told Me To Do It’ and Bill (R.I.P.) mentioned on the site elsewhere/somewhere. Here’s 4 pix, I’m sure Sean can enlighten us on the importance/reasons behind the goggles! Sean can be just be seen in 1 pic in the days when he wore a blonde wig!
More pix to follow this week…

Mmmmmm taste that chocolate milk…
February 20th, 2008 at 11:44 am
At one point I took to wearing a kiddies diving mask and snorkel onstage but soon found that it steamed up so much that I could not see the (inevitable) punches coming.Bill however was enamoured by the idea as it kept the gobbing from his eyes,a particular concern of his.More important is his coat,a dirty old man/flasher mac with cuddly toys saftey pinned all over it.Classic Bill.upset a lot of people with its tones of paedophilia…..
Animals headgear was a giant plastic snailshell affixed to a bowler, his trousers two paisly dresses serving as one leg each of his flares.
..My wig was a marylin monroe daringly snatch and grabbed from a showroom dummy on fonthill rd,home of cut price schmutter.I wore it backwards to give a massive quiff effect. It was not visible at later showds as a took to wearing a giant tiffany style coca cola lampshade on top to keep the rays from beaming evil instructions into my brain.
Interesting to note the backdrop that relates to the 2nd generation of fuck thrash noise, eat shit being the first and hi-jacking Sigue Sigue Sputniks terminology. The band always had a policy of jumping on any gravy train going and using other peoples names to get noticed (see Psychic TV are Crap,Blyth Power are Pretty Vacant etc etc.)Not that we really had anything much against these other bands,we just wanted to use their hard work so we could get well known by doing sod all.
February 20th, 2008 at 11:53 am
would thse shots be from wood green and the blue house? In one I see our iranian kickboxer security man who always got confused and attacked us not the people assualting us,it was he who felled clive sex.In another I see wood green graffitti.Another shows animal with a “gimmick”generic label, the outer extent of my quiff and martin, “bug” ,the drummers head.Being a THFC bootboy he often left drumming duties for more important fighting
February 20th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
that picture of the kid with the spoons on the psychic tv poster…hehe
do you fancy recounting your run in with genesis?
February 20th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Ha ha… I’d forgotten Martin was with God Told Me To Do It, he was best pals with Veg from Grove Park who was in Hagars(?) and We Are Going To Eat You.
I haven’t seen Veg for a few years but he’s a top bloke (well not bad for a MIGHTY SPURS fan anyway).
February 20th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Danny, what ,the one involving richard branson?Or one of the others….
Tim,alien saw veg recently,it was him who told of the steve cable/priest saga
February 20th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
how many were there? i just remember the grudge match for the wildest audience in london….
February 20th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Ahh,the famous “grudge match heavyweight playoff”!I was saving that for my book…..but maybe I could be persuaded…..
One other was when PTV debuted “i want to tell you a story,a very special story, its about brian jones,he was in the rolling stones” at the virgin megastore with branson looking on svengali-like and cameras rolling.Id gone down with ronnie and bedwin et al,but for a different reason. In any interval I cried “boo!Hippies!Sellouts! You belog in a museum! What a tasteless jacket, why dont you burn it?” etc while pelting them with any rubbish that came to hand.Strangely the orange peel I chucked at Gen proved the last straw and much keystone kops chasing of sean (on skateboard, natch) ensued.Suffice to say dickie “pickle”branson was not amused.Gen had a bit of a stamp and sulk too.Cant say I blame him.I was a very annoying young man….
February 20th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Sean I can barely remember what I did half an hour ago, let alone where I took those photos! 1’s got ‘85 written on the back and 2 have ‘86, the other nothing written, were GTMTDI around that long?! You’re probably right about Wood Green if you recognise the graffiti… apart from that it could have been some embassy somewhere, ahem, cough, cough…
I recognise the bloke you say is ‘Bug’ Sean, always saw him at gigs here and there. Personally I don’t remember any violence at GTMTDI gigs but wouldn’t have been looking for it anyway!
I’m fairly certain (he says not really having a clue) that I’ve got a load of flyers stashed away, including the ‘PTV are crap” one, I’ll try and scan any that fit on the scanner and get ‘em upped too… that’s if I remember of course.
February 20th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Animal and myself pondered long and hard on how to insult and annoy PTV as much as possible and as I remember it we decided that “childish” would be the most effective,thus…..PTV are crap.No spoons were actually specially bent for the poster, animal was just a genius at finding just the right image
February 20th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
I was at, and saw that little PTV showcase in Oxford Street that Sean mentions earlier…Went down with ‘Psychic’ Rod from Ipswich. ‘Psychic’ Rod is a blokes name, not something to prod someone with, TOPY Style!
February 20th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
In the name of all things decent can we please move this GTMTDI stuff off the Clash posting. We are lumping together an admittedly really funny joke band (that I was happily involved with) in with one of, if not the, greatest bands of all time.
February 20th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
ok, will do, but later cos i’m off out now – great to see you here incidentally john
February 20th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
ps i never knew you were involved with the clash
February 20th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
nice one Gerard, and great to see you on here too. It’s good to hear that most everyone is still around.
February 20th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
i seem to remember ‘national trust a hippy’ as a GTMTDI phrase re: stonehenge – am i imagining this?
February 20th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Done now Mr Wildebeest. Please send any interesting GTMTDI stuff to KYPP if you feel it is of any interest. (thinks) will have to put up more Clash…Gerard have stuck up Stonehenge flyer you mentioned.

Plus a couple of other misc ones. No idea of quality after all this time, but rare as a 3rd eyebrow some of them. Yours if you want, can stick ‘em in padded bag and snail mail, if not, sadly it’s probably the skip outside our house as other half getting tough, evil moo that she is!!
February 21st, 2008 at 11:55 am
PS. Am quite keen on digital files of some of them, let me know if you can help?! You’re the best Penguin, top bloke, never a bad word said, diamond geezer, top drawer fella… can I stop now?!
;-D
February 21st, 2008 at 12:03 pm
PPS. Moon on a stick while you’re at it, would be nice too Penguin!
Right no more posts from me for a bit, cluttered the thread enough…
February 21st, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Simon, got a few of those tapes, if you want me to upload the decent quality ones on here send them to me. Get in touch on penguin / mob or all the madmen myspace for address details. I am willing to convert them to CDR for you but it will take time. I have five tapes from Pavlik and one from Mark Palmer to do, which will not be on this site. So in the end that means 6 x 90 minute tapes uploaded = 540 minutes (nine hours) for personal use (not for the benifit of the public). Like I say I do not mind doing them in time, but I would rather put 540 minutes (9 hours) of tapes / records / energy into uploading material onto this site so punters can enjoy it rather than just do personal stuff. You have 13 tapes that would mean a minimum of 13 hours to upload then transfer. Again I must stress I do not mind doing them for the people named above and for you, and they are in very safe hands, but just dont hassle me if you dont get them back the next week! As you know I work all day and get back about 20.00 every night, then straight onto uploading (for the site first). A labour of love…a hatching in late March will not help my time. Will get Pavs and Marks done before that time certainly…Plus got to do one for Andy Martin I just remembered…Oh well, back to work…out in an hour to watch the Kings of Europe perform down the WORLD FAMOUS WHITE HART LANE…go go go…then a quick upload later when I return…
February 21st, 2008 at 7:47 pm
here a link to some more GTMTDI stuff that I just found, other than the GTMTDI t-shirts which I miraculously still have. I don’t posses a single photo, tape, record, review or anything else from those days. When I was figuring what I was going to take with me to America none of that stuff was at the top of the list. This link has more of Animal’s classic artwork and some press stuff.

February 22nd, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Chill Pengs,
I was only really asking if you wanted any of them, literally maybe 1 or 2 that I wouldn’t mind on CDR, but really not that bovvered! I’ll see if they are actually worth salvaging first, as they’ve have been lugged here, there and everywhere. Have got a bit obsessive recently with hoarding music and sometimes just have to have things for the sake of it, sad I know! Oh and your labour of love is very much appreciated… but if you spent less time at White Fart Lane you’d get a lot more done!! Ouch, I felt that from here…
Cool link John de beast, shame about your gear, but you always travelled light! Not like some of us who carted all sorts of crap around and still live out of boxes after all these years, the earache I get you wouldn’t believe! ;-D
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Simon – just said this on Scotch Punk thread but
“Vorsprung durch technik as we say in bonnie Jockland. Downloaded a Free Sound Recorder. Used a double ended jack plug (ouch) to connect headphones output of vinyl record player to microphone input of computer.
Faffed around but ended up with an MP3 of nearly all of the Mod Cons ‘Buildings of the 70s’ (see above). Saved it, e-mailed it to myself (2 minutes to upload , 2 minutes to down load for 3 mins 23 secs music) – and there it was, hissing and crackling away just like the actual record had done about half an hour before.”
In other words armed with a double ended jack plug lead (plus a old fashioned big to modern small jack plug converter for old hi-fi systems) a downloaded Free Sound Recorder (googled on phrase and found several -one I got was here
http://www.sound-recorder.biz/free_sound_recorder.html
you can use the microphone input socket on computer to record vinyl/ tapes etc as mp3 files – and convert to CDR etc.
I also got a trial of a mixing thingy so you can clean up the sound, but haven’t tried it yet.
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Simon, like I said, happy to do them, how ever many you want, just may take a little time, cheers fella.
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Penguin – I sent some stuff (MP3’s) over today to you and Tony: did you get them?
I can pimp this stuff until the Evildrome Boozearama…
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Yeah Nic, have replied to you…looking forward to getting more! What’s the second bit about?
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Just rambling from the drinkies really…
I was trying to say “I have all kinds of this sort of thing that I could keep sending over until the end of time” but it came out in some kind of addled reference to the pub mentioned in ‘Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’…
My apologies (Booze gets me over-excited)…
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Oh well, thought you were offering me some porn or something. Raised my hopes a bit…never mind.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:51 am
Thanks for the input (no pun intended) Al, gonna’ look into some options.
Cheers Pengy, let you know. Oh and I went to Sandwich, today and I found your boat!! ;-D

February 27th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Woodgeen art centre was an old carpet warehouse squated by me, allan, bill and animal, we then squatted the kardboard box and then the ballet skool, there was loads of squatters in woodgreen, we use to have gigs a couple of times a week, Doom and Deviated instinct were most likley to have been playing the kardboard box as we seem to have played with them loads when i was in gutrot.
February 27th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Thanks for the info Steve – helps me to remember…
I was trying to think of the name of Gutrot the other week, but couldn’t bring it back into my head – it kept getting muddled up with other words: you did some good noise…
I still see various Doom and D.I. chaps on a regular basis – singer of D.I. is now a university lecturer, and singer of Doom is now a DJ on Kerrang radio…
March 11th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Just to clarify a comment by Penguin. I did indeed work for the Jobcentre, not because my dole was cut but I needed some money.
I saved a lot (easy to do whilst squatting and working) and went on an extended 2 year round the world trip. And very nice it was too !!
March 11th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Hi Tania, welcome to the site…thanks for clearing that up, have you any photos from these times at all that you would like me to put up?
April 17th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I might have some pics from the Kardboard Box, did a couple of all day gigs their, seem to remember part of our PA blew up!!
Heady days….

April 18th, 2008 at 12:20 am
Nice one, if you stick them on a comment, I will put the best ones in photo gallery with your credit. Anyone out there have any GTMTDI tapes at all?
April 24th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Animals got a GTMTDI bootleg which i keep promising to digitize – ive also got several Rachels Pilchards tapes if anyones interested – keep up the good work
December 4th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Hallo John Wilderbeast
Ian (ex of Stef) having a grin at it all…You still in US?
December 5th, 2008 at 7:18 am
Ian!!!!! Wow great to hear from you, how are you? What have you been doing? Hey Penguin could you please do me a favor and give Ian my e-mail address or give me his? Thanks in advance.
December 5th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Heheheh…What have I been doing? I dunno, chuckling over the obituaries…Speak when we have a little more privacy (Yeah, Tony, please furnish the Beeste w my email. Thanking you sir.) as I have been working on my ongoing project concerning the setting of a new standard by which to measure infamy, certain aspects of which must remain strictly covert.

October 3rd, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Anyone got a decent GTMTDI live tape I could snatch briefly to upload on this post?
October 3rd, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Animal has a live at the blue house (bootleg) tape
will prod him to come by
October 3rd, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Didn’t find any Kardbord Box pics in the end…..sorry. Anyone read Ian Glaspers new book – Trapped in a Scene – cracking read!!
October 3rd, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Si, please prod your animal. That would be grand.
October 6th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
That must have been the Blue House gig that caused Animal to send me to Coventry for a year, as was his wont. He didn’t like me criticising him for hiring an Iranian bouncer to lay into the punters
October 7th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
I cant believe you still bitch about or even concern yourself with stuff that occurred so long ago. And was f-in boring then.. I remember you as being somewhat creepy in that you always hung out with people ten years or more younger than yourself. Lugworm? F-in chickenhawk more like..
October 7th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Don’t get the chickenhawk comment if that’s you, Animal. Don’t know how old you were at the time but I think you had left school. Not sure how old you think that I was.
I don’t think Bill Auld (R.I.P.) would have chosen to live with me if he thought I was dodgy in the way that you are inferring.
By the way this site is mainly concerned with stuff that occurred a long time ago, I wasn’t bitching but thought it might jog some memories of the Bluehouse gig & your attempt to emulate the Sex Pistols at the Nashville Rooms.

Nice way to complain about someone bringing up ridiculous stuff from yonks ago by bringing up ridiculous stuff from yonks ago. Everyone including Luggy was really young back then and though there were some creepy people back then that did enjoy the company of young uns he definitely wasn’t one of them.
Luggy what makes you think ‘not’ is Animal? That comment really doesn’t sound like anything he would say unless he’s really changed completely.

John, don’t know who else who would have got upset about my comment. Apologies if it isn’t Animal, I still got on alright with him last time that I saw him a couple of years ago.

Perhaps it is the Iranian bouncer?

Yeah, there were a few spurious types back then but the only importuning I experienced was from old Ray, who was really just a lonely old man.
Maybe I was too ugly. Im going to start a self help society for those who are hung up because they were NOT abused as kids..
John, please forgive me for the protracted silence, Ive been absurdly busy and the time that gets delegated to email is often incompatible with writing cheerful, chatty and entertaining communiques.. Anyhoo it HAS been twenty odd sodding years..Not that I love you any less for it my rose. Will send you a proper state of the nation in the near future. Hope youre well.

And the clue as to whether that “not” was Animal or “not” (?) would, I imagine, lie in their choice of psuedonyms…

As in the Pistols/ Bodies?
“I’m not an animal”…?

You, Alistair (doubt if you would remember me) are a man of no small import, directly instrumental as you were in bringing into being what would become Coil.
Thank you

Alistair and Coil? Did not know there was a connection there. You live and learn. You sure you are not thinking of Zos Kia though Ian? Al released the debut 7″ on All The Madmen Records in 1984.
J Balance(RIP) and Sleazy from Coil were close to this lot, and both Coil and Zos Kia shared a cassette release together in 1983/84 which was a very early release by both outfits. I used to have it actually but it went walkies in daze of yore. Gutted, cos it would have been on this site by now.
Will upload something from Current 93 instead I think tonight!
Luggy and John, to put your mind at rest the person called ‘not’ is not Animal but someone else that has contributed comments to this very post throughout the life of the post. So just someone pulling your leg mate!
‘not’ and the legite contributer have the same email details.

Yeah, Zos was an early incarnation of Coil – J.B and Sleazy. See the *Nightmare Culture” stuff W Boyd. Also “Sewn open”..etc
Same email details really? The rotter….
Earth covers earth….

Thanks Ian, but Penguin is right. I was involved in releasing the Zos Kia single, but never met Coil. The Zos Kia connection came through Min – and it was Mark Wilson / Mob who set it up. The other Psychic TV / Coil connection came through Mouse. She was briefly in PTV and later was friendly with Coil.
And then Sarah (who lived at 103 Grosvenor Avenue) used to baby sit for Paula and Gen…
Did I know you then (1984ish)? Where did we meet?

whats that mp3 posted above that says music mostly by crass, why is it posted here?
August 21st, 2010 at 10:56 am
The David Tibet mix up of Crass / others / Thatcher-Reagan Crass tapes would not fit anywhere else and although I witnessed GTMTDI in a live capacity I have, and still have, no recordings by that band to upload onto this post.
