Rudimentary Peni – Nottingham, Yorker Club 01/08/82

Cosmetic Plague / B-Ward / Blind Dogs / Inside / Zero Again / Subdued Violence / Mice Race / Media Person / The Gardener / Teenage Time Killers / Sacrifice / Farce / Tower Of Strength / Only Human / Bloody Jellies / Nothing But A Nightmare

Indebted to Chris Low for access to this cassette. A rare glimpse into a Rudimentary Peni live performance, never really thought that many audiences took them that seriously around this era…the band disappeared out of view for a number of years in 1983 amid rumours of death and mental illness, then released the massive ‘Cacophony’ LP in 1988, suddenly people started to take more notice. Nick Blinko’s morbid artwork, displayed in galleries and on the Internet and a book ‘Primal Screamer’ published by Spare Change Books in 1995 also added to the mystique and interest in this band.

Nowadays, audiences all over the world would tear your arm off for a ticket to see Rudimentary Peni reform, shame the audiences in 1982 were so indifferent to the sound that Rudimentary Peni performed!

This gig is a decent quality ‘crowd’ recording, well worth a listen. A performance in the same year at St James Church, Kings Cross, London is also uploaded on this site somewhere. Use the search function on the right.

I was at this one as well! hehehe…
    :)
I can’t remember who else played apart from Business of Pleasure and The Abductors who were both local Nottingham braindead punk bands, and Verbal Warning…
The gig was organised by Dig who later went on to found Earache Records…

I know I took the Peni VERY seriously :) particularly as they were totally infleunced by the first Dayglow Abortions EP…

  4. Nic Says:

Ah, time…how it alters the memory!
Cheers Dez for the info – I could have sworn it wasn’t at the Union…but you should know!

well i was the lead singer in ‘the business of pleasure’..not exactly brain dead…lol..and we supported verbal warning at the yorker plus other bands ..any more info or videos of this gig and pics would be very much appreciated ..babz

  7. Nic Says:

My apologies, Babs, for my remiss comment earlier in the thread…I won’t make any remarks about brains again…
    :)

However I KNEW it was at the Yorker…maybe The Abductors didn’t play that one…I used to travel up to Notts quite often for gigs through 1982 and 1983, and they all get lumped into a big blur as time goes on…
For example, I went to see Subhumans play (with Faction – and probably Verbal Warning again) which I remember as being up some side alley in the city centre, but I can’t remember much else about it…was that the Ad-Lib club?

  8. babz Says:

I have recording of ‘the business of pleasure’ from the yorker gig but none of the other bands that played …do you want to hear some and how do I send them?…babz

Didnt go to Yorker but Abductors were on the gig poster I think but didnt play. Never been braindead, I think Abductors tried to keep some humour.
