Psychedelic Furs – CBS Records 1980

Sister Europe

****

Put this up for the following reasons:

1/ I like the A side

2/ To stick two fingers up to CBS, and simultaneously, a large slap on the back for illegal downloads

3/ The feeling of relaxing in the knowledge that Tony Puppy will get the writ through the door and not me

4/ That’s it really

I’m reading Paul Marko’s book on the Roxy club at the moment, and very much enjoying it.

The important part of the book for me is the bit after the well documented ‘100 days of the Roxy’ – the bit from Spring 77 to Spring 78 when punk was becoming a lifestyle in London town and punk-squating was becoming an explosion into the scene.

It was when loads of punks were turning up in London with nowhere to live and no money. I remember at the end of gigs walking along Charing Cross Road with a straggling gaggle of punksters, opening squats in the old tenament buildings for them to spend the night in, and maybe settle there.

George Berger mentions these buildings in his ‘Story of Crass’ book so I know it’s not a dream.

Anyway, amongst the bands playing at the latter Roxy were the Psychedelic Furs (billed as ‘The Furs’).

And I remember first seeing their name on the back of leather jackets, alongside Crass and Ants and Mothers Pride, at many gigs.

A good band to choose Penguin.

Anecdote No. 1 = at James Lane squat Brett has a copy of a book called ‘Imitation of Christ’ that he’s theived from somewhere. Quite the shock a few days later to see a band playing a song called ‘Imitation of Christ’, which turns out to be the P. Furs. It’s then I have to decide if the drugs and magic are working or I’m going insane.

Thanks for option 3 by the way.

Almost ecstasy. Side one of first P.Furs album…Sister Europe, India , Imitation of Christ — just. just. …just about perfect.

Buy a car and watch it rust….

But daughter sez ‘Turn that crap off’ so she can watch QI on tv.

    I’m going to bed.

Great to hear “****” again, I’ve wanted to hear this for ages. I bought this in 1980 and played it countless times but my copy vanished somewhere along the way. Quite Eno-esque, Neu-like and … European. Checked eBay but none for sale. I don’t think this is available on cd. Are CBS/Sony bothered? Probably not. Thank you very much.

PS – Don’t try to re-name the b-side name as “****” – Windows doesn’t let you. Ahead of their time, those boys. Were The Furs havin’ a larf?

When Wasted Youth began they supported The Furs on a big British tour.
we had to pay a fee to go on this tour but the exposure was worth it,
