Leo from Soundbox Studios, Thomaby Gardens, Edmonton, N18 passed away on Friday 20th August after losing his fight against cancer.

He was an important part of the anarcho-punk scene and I am sure his friends and members of bands that he worked with would like to know about his passing on.

Other than being involved in a huge way with DIRT, Rubella Ballet and Crass, Leo had hundreds of musicians pass through his studio over a period of 30 years. Bands like the Stratford Mercenaries and Shwartzenneger, both bands with Steve Ignorant on vocals after Crass had folded. Other notables going through the studio were Lack Of Knowledge, Omega Tribe, Honey Bane as well as members of the Buzzcocks, Angelic Upstarts, Citizen Fish, and so many more it would just run on and on like a who’s who of punk. Similar of course to the other north London studio, Southern Studios in Wood Green run by the late John Loder who knew Leo well.

Leo also done lighting for all the bands DIRT toured or performed (before 1983) with like Flux Of Pink Indians, The Mob, Conflict etc. Notably Leo also was in charge of the lights at the Zig Zag Squat all dayer, the same gig that Fox and Vomit, both of Leo’s sons left DIRT.

The DIRT skull was also Leo’s design. He designed and painted the logo / banner long before Fox and Vomit joined Gary, Deno and Lou to form DIRT.

It was the backdrop for Fox’s and Vomit’s old punk band called the Gutter Rats, a band that was going nowhere, so it was used for DIRT for which it is now best known.

The logo nowadays is of course an iconic anarcho-punk image from 1980 in the same way as the Crass symbol or the Poison Girls ‘crow’ symbol has become.

Leo’s funeral is at 3:30pm on Monday 13th September at

If any browsers feel the urge to get a photograph onto the slideshow at the Steve Ignorant shows coming up in September and October in the U.K. and Europe then send good quality scans whether portraits or half body shots to punks@southern.com It is not worth sending in photographs of the subject (you!) halfway up a mountain or something as these photos will not be used. The photographs will need to be clear enough to show all the facial features.

The email of the scanned photograph should be clearly marked with your name that you may want to come up on the slideshow and added to all the above the photograph sent in must be from the time of Crass starting out to when the band performed no longer either live or in the studio. 1977 until 1984 for those who may have forgotten.

Alistair Livingstone, the great man, one time ex Kill Your Pet Puppy fanzine scribe, All The Madmen Records head honcho (apres The Mob and pre Rob Challice) sometime writer and commentator on this site succesfully passed his degree on July 15th for the work he submitted on the Galloway Levellers.

It’s a 10 minute walk from Clapton overground staion.

Buses that go past along Lea Bridge Rd are:

If it rains, there are plenty of trees around or nice walks to be had as well as a riverside pub nearby. Not that near any shops so you’ll have to bring provisions & poisons with you.

Just over a month ago now, on June 14th, the nasty Streamline hosting snatched all the downloads from this site without any kind of warning. We are now no longer with said hosting site and Penguin is in the process of setting things right again. 

OK, a decision has been made for the mp3 hosting.

Media Fire is what the site will be using.

In the next few weeks I will be re-uploading the old posted mp3 material onto the posts on this site.

Only when I have finished with the old uploads will I start loading up other new material on this links / downloads and post 86 pages.

I will be either re-uploading and sorting out the links from the most recent post (Lack Of Knowledge) downwards to the earliest post way back 10 months ago,  or reuploading from my MP3 harddrive (in numerical then alphabetical order) and then search the site for the posts concerned.

Will be expermenting in the next couple of nights with both systems to check which is faster and easier for me to get the old posts correct.

Please be patient and keep checking back to check whether links work, also please let me know if a link is incorrect in any way, like the A side tracklisting is on the B side link and visa versa – that kind of thing.

If I choose not to re-upload a past post, I will keep the post up with all the old comments on, but will leave a big message saying NOT UPLOADABLE underneath the actual link.

UPDATE 23/07/08: All downloads (950 of the buggers) have now been switched to Mediafire and are playable right NOW – please let me know of any errors with the tracks though…think I entered everything correctly but you never know!

New material up from 25/07/08.

All the music downloads on the site have been deleted by persons unknown from the server.

They CAN be uploaded again, but firstly Tony Puppy will have to get to the bottom of why this has happened.

It could be that the host site have done something incredibly unethical and pulled the plug for some reason. The hosting site has not sent any emails to Tony concerning any problems or maintenace with the KYPP site over this weekend.

If the hosting company deny any knowledge then it could be a disgruntled hacker deliberately wiping of all the downloads.

Either way all my personal mp3 files ARE SAFE, just need to be reloaded, which would take some time but is do-able at least.

I am not going to reload until I know that the hosting site will not take them down, if they were responsible for the deletions in the first place.

Tony and Gerard will keep me updated with news on this matter, and I will proceed with reinserting all the mp3 files when I get told to do so.

This could take several days to get to the bottom of, so keep checking back.

Please be aware that Ginny the lady who filmed it lived in Balls Pond Road near Dalston at the time.

Some outside footage is included in Stewarts edit of Balls Pond Road along side the edited footage set inside of the Huntingdon Street squat, which is along Caledonian Road near Kings Cross.

So two areas of London filmed and edited to one short film.

The editing is so good that I thought I should clear this up from the start in case you feel it is ’set’ only in Ball Pond Road, Dalston, as the street signs would suggest!
